GeoRSS in a Book Title
March 28th, 2008
In what appears to be the first use of “GeoRSS” in a book title, there is an upcoming book “Practical Google Maps Mashups with Google Mapplets, GeoRSS and KML”. The book won’t be published until this September, and isn’t yet listed on the Apress site, but you can see the Amazon listing here.
While this is the first title that includes “GeoRSS”, searching across Amazon shows 22 results when searching for term “GeoRSS”. Google Book Search shows 90 results. However, it doesn’t appear to have a way to return the number of unique results, so my book shows up twice, and Google Maps Hacks has the English and Japanese versions.
Looking over the categories of books that mention GeoRSS, there is a very good selection. The most prevalent, and obvious, are mashup and programming books. There is a Mac OS X Leopard book, assumedly referring to the included Dashboard widget. There are a number of surprising (and incorrect) results, such as “A Unsocial Socialist”, which is actually an incorrect OCR for “George”.
New implementations of GeoRSS ala Where 2.0
June 26th, 2006
In my presentation at Where 2.0, I warned that my brief survey of support would be out of date by the end of the conference. I talked to many folks about GeoRSS, and so many had plans to implement, cause it is simply so easy that not supporting it would be more work! Here’s a few GeoRSS developments I noticed coming out of Where..
- GeoTagThings, “a simple way to assign any web resource - anything with a url - a location in the normal, human physical world”, launched with GeoRSS support.
- Flagr added GeoRSS to its feeds.
- Plazes quietly added GeoRSS to some of its feeds, and has more complete support across their service in the works.
- VirtualEarth is pushing forward its support of GeoRSS, and has even reborrowed my borrowed hype about “GeoRSS as the Unix pipe of Geo data”
- Yahoo, at their lunch meetup, mentioned they are looking into GeoRSS export from their API .. a step towards unlocking data from all the AJAX based mashups out there, that I’ve been pushing for a while.
Fun with GeoRSS
June 20th, 2006
Check out the Fun With GeoRSS article by Adena Schutzberg (via Mapping Hacks). It gives a very quick overview of the flavors of GeoRSS, and some tools (such as Mapufacture) that you can use to mix-and-mash GeoRSS Feeds.
GeoRSS Where2.0 Presentation
June 13th, 2006
Mikel just gave a quick overview of GeoRSS at the Where2.0 conference. He pointed out that this morning GeoRSS was already mentioned 5 times in the keynote speeches. GeorRSS is definitely gaining interest and support by major vendors: Yahoo, Microsoft, and Platial to name a few.
Here is a Mapufacture link to the currently available Where2.0 GeoRSS Feeds.
You can get the presentation here.
There were some interesting questions raised, such as support of Time in GeoRSS feeds, and interoperability of GeoRSS with KML (the Google sponsored Geo-XML format).
XTech 2006 GeoRSS paper
May 23rd, 2006
You can now read the XTech 2006 paper, GeoRSS : Geographically Encoded Objects for RSS Feeds, written by Mikel Maron. It gives a good and short introduction and overview of the GeoRSS ideas and implementations.
I definitely recommend it if you’re new to GeoRSS or want a little bit of inspiration and insight as to why it’s such a great development.
Where 2.0 - last day for discount registration
May 1st, 2006
As I and a few other friends of GeoRSS (including Mikel and Mike Liebhold, who are handsome enough to rate pictures on the web site) will be speaking and/or attending Where 2.0, I thought I’d give the conference a quick plug and mention that today is the last day for cheaper registration.
